What is Sports Massage?
All of the above can be achieved by several sports massage techniques; Trigger point therapy – This is locating hyperirritable spots (trigger points or knots) within the muscles and then applying a focal and firm pressure for up to 10 seconds to diffuse the hyperirritable spot. This is very effective on the traps, rhomboids and rotator cuff. Cross tissue frictions - This involves using the therapists reinforced thumb to massage and cause friction on your scar in a direction that is perpendicular to the line of the scar/muscle fibers orientation. This technique helps to remodel the scar tissue and ensures that the collagen fibres of the scar are aligned properly. Soft tissue release – Involves pinning an area of tissue with a fist/elbow and then stretching the tissues and muscles. This stretches and lengthens a very precise area and can have a very immediate and dramatic response to pain. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) – this involves contracting the targeted muscle against the therapist’s resistance for up to 10-12 seconds. This in return desensitizes the muscle reflexes to tense when being stretched even further, increasing the length of the muscle. Therapist passive stretching – This is done very gently once the tissues have been warmed up. It involves the therapist passively moving the joints and tissues into a new range of motion until a gentle stretch has been achieved During the sports massage, there might be some slight discomfort/pain but you will be informed beforehand when this might happen.

Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation, lengthening, and massaging of soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons, connective tissues, and joints).
Sports massage involves a firm and focal pressure delivered from the therapist's elbows, knuckles, palms, and thumbs targeted at specific muscle groups.

During a sports massage, the aim is to relax, increase the range of motion, decrease pain in muscles, and increase blood flow to soft tissue to promote tissue repair and healing. A byproduct of sports massage is increasing the activity of the lymphatic system. This in return helps in moving any swelling, toxins, and byproducts from the muscles and surrounding tissues.
