What is peripheral joint mobilizations ?

Peripheral joint mobilizations are passive movements designed to address stiff, sore, and achy joints. These movements mimic the physiological and accessory motions that naturally occur within joints. Performed within your own subjective pain threshold, they are kept at a maximum of 4/10 on the pain scale, ensuring comfort and safety. This technique is highly beneficial for individuals experiencing Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, Hip Knee or Ankle and Foot pain.

The benefits of these passive joint movements include:

  • Increased Joint Lubrication: By stimulating the secretion of synovial fluid, joint mobilizations help reduce pain and improve mobility.

  • Breaking Down Fibrous Tissue: Stretching and mobilizing the joint can help to break down restrictive fibrous tissues, improving movement.

  • Reduction of Muscle Spasms: These techniques can decrease muscle guarding and spasms by encouraging the joint to move into new ranges of motion. This also signals the brain that the joint is safe, reducing the fear of reinjury.

  • Improved Proprioception: Mobilizations stimulate mechanoreceptors in the soft tissues, enhancing body awareness and control.

This treatment method was pioneered by Geoffrey Maitland, a trailblazer in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
