What is vertebra joint mobilizations ?

Vertebral joint mobilizations are passive movements designed to address stiffness, soreness, and discomfort in the neck (cervical), mid-back (thoracic), and lower back (lumbar) vertebrae.

These movements replicate the natural physiological and accessory motions within your joints. If certain activities or movements have become difficult or painful, vertebral mobilizations provide a safe and methodical way to regain motion and reduce discomfort.

Performed entirely within your subjective pain threshold, this treatment ensures that discomfort never exceeds a 4/10 on the pain scale. It is an excellent option for individuals suffering from:

  • Headaches

  • Neck pain

  • Upper, mid, and lower back pain

How Vertebral Mobilizations Can Benefit You:

  • Joint Lubrication: Encourages the secretion of synovial fluid to reduce pain and improve joint mobility.

  • Fibrous Tissue Breakdown: Stretches and reduces restrictive fibrous tissues, allowing for better range of motion.

  • Decreased Muscle Spasms: Relieves joint guarding and muscle spasms by promoting safe, new ranges of motion while signalling the brain that the area is no longer at risk.

  • Improved Proprioception: Stimulates mechanoreceptors in joint soft tissues to enhance body awareness and control.

This treatment method was pioneered by Geoffrey Maitland, a visionary in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, whose techniques have become a cornerstone in modern manual therapy.
