What is Remedial Massage?
Remedial massage is a deeply relaxing massage that involves the use of the therapist's forearms and open palms to apply light to medium pressure on large muscle groups including the neck, shoulders, and the whole of the back which responds very well to remedial massage.
To help you relax and destress, the treatment room is always warm, the bed is heated with an electric blanket and the area of your body that is not getting treated is covered with a cozy towel. The use of heat is also used via an infrared lamp (optional) to promote blood flow, warm muscles and help relaxation.
The goal of remedial massage is to release overall mental and physical stress, relax large muscle groups, increase blood flow to promote tissue healing, relax the central nervous system, and increase the activity of the lymphatic system; assisting in moving any swelling, toxins, and byproducts from the muscles and surrounding tissues.
All of the above can be achieved by several remedial massage techniques such as; Effleurage – all treatments start with Effleurage. This is light friction between the therapist’s forearms and open palms on the targeted muscles. This is to gently promote blood flow, kickstart the lymphatic system, and let the client get used to the texture of the cream/wax and the area that will be treated. Petrissage – This technique aims at targeting the muscles lying deep into the skin. There will be movements such as; Kneading – This is a deep rhythmical movement involving a closed hand and slight knuckles (Imagine kneading dough) Tapotement – This is a light chopping rhythmical motion involving the outside of the therapist's hands. (Helps mobilize any fibrous tissues) Sweeping and gliding – These are long, deep, and smooth movements using the therapist's forearms and open palms (Very relaxing)
